North Bethany, Delaware refers to the part of Bethany Beach that lies to the north, closer to the Delaware Seashore State Park. Although South Bethany is a community with an identity distinct from that of Bethany Beach, North Bethany is essentially a part of the the Bethany Beach community that is home to several hundred residents. It is an area with a variety of ocean block houses that are popular for vacation rentals.
In the first half of the 20th century, residents from Washington D.C., Scranton and Pittsburgh discovered this area as perfect for establishing summer homes. In fact, when the Disciples of Christ developed a summer camp here at the turn of the century, about 150 lots were quickly purchased by residents primarily from those communities. Citizens of Washington D.C. tended to settle along the southern beaches while Pittsburgh residents tended to reside in the "North Bethany" area. In fact, the concentration of Pittsburgh-area residents was such that the area became known as "Little Pittsburgh."
Parks and Recreation
The dominant park by is Delaware Seashore State Park
, which lies on a barrier island just to the north of the North Bethany area. This park covers in excess of 2,800-acres, and it offers broad sand beaches for those that love swimming, sunbathing, surf fishing and beach volleyball. The Indian River Inlet offers shore fishing to avid anglers, and the Indian River Marina addresses the needs of those that love boating, sailing and windsurfing.
Attractions and Activities
Upriver one finds the Bethany Bay Golf Course
, a par-three, executive-style layout situated right along the Indian River. Tree-lined fairways and undulating greens make for a sporting challenge. The holes range from about 100 to 180-yards in length.
Also in the Ocean View area is the Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club
, a 27-hole resort-style
layout that is both fun and challenging at the same time. This upscale facility features thick bent grass fairways and greens surrounded by ample water hazards, contoured bunkers and indigenous sand dunes. Play 18-holes here and you'll use almost every club in your bag.
The Surfin' Snowman Five-Mile Race
is a new Bethany Beach event held at the very end of December. Intrepid runners and walkers can participate in an event that is defiantly scheduled in the heart of winter. Racers run a double loop through town before heading north for the last half-mile or so on the boardwalk. There's also a two-mile event that simply requires completion of a single loop. Awards go to the top three finishers in every age group.
Those that want to live in North Bethany will find that life in a resort community can be exhilarating and full of interesting activities. The services of a qualified local reactor with good local knowledge can help one to determine where the value-priced properties are. Some will want to purchase a primary residence here, while others will consider a vacation home here. Investment real estate also has potential, given the number of vacationers that want summer vacation rentals in North Bethany.
